Summary: do not buy these units
Previously I wrote a review concerning two RCA units that I purchase that were both defective and had to be returned to the service center in Buffalo, NY. It cost $13.00 in shipping to return the units for service under warranty. The units were actually replaced with a newer model. However, one of the units was again defective and would not turn on. The other unit continues to perform adequately. I still would not recommend RCA converters. These things probably cost them $5.00 to produce in China and they sell for $50.00.

Rating: 4 (good) Nickname: anonymous Date: 2008-11-10
Summary: Good tuner, clear picture, good sound, and universal remote a plus feature.
Am currently on my second unit. The first one died in 24 hours. Returned and was offered exchange on same unit. Second one is working fine, so far. The universal remote is a nice touch, turns on TV and operates volume from same remote as that which controls converter box. Let's hope this second unit last a while.

Summary: Purchased two units: one did not work at all: 2nd unit stopped afer 2-days
Purchased two RCA DTA800B in June 2008 from Walmart. (rebate expired in 90 days...right..so I hurried up and redeemed it) Didn't set the units up until December 2008 One unit wouldn't come out of standby mode. Second unit work for two days and then wouldn't come out of standby mode. Walmart would not exchange units. (claimed they couldn't get credit) I had all receipts. It would appear they had issues with these units. Called the 800 number for warranty at RCA. Customer rep said he would have his manager e-mail the return shipping instructions...which didn't happen. E-mailed RCA service on line concerning problem ...no response. Recalled 800 number and spoke with different customer rep who gave me return info shipping instructions. To date, I have yet to receive units back from RCA. Suffice it to say...RCA products are on my "not to buy" list.

Summary: Good Value
I own both the RCA DTA800 and RCA DTA800B1. I am not sure which unit is supposed to be described here since there is no RCA DTA800B(if there is then my apologies since I am not familiar with it)? The newest iteration the RCA DTA800B1 has both analog pass through and an EPG? I have had no issues with either RCA product. The tuner works good and the picture is very good, much better than the normal analog around here which can be ghosting and snowy. I have 14 clear channels now instead of just 3 VHF and 2 UHF channels, which for being 6400 feet up in the mountains where I am is pretty good! I don\t have a smart antenna hooked up to it just a rooftop VHF/UHF antenna with an amplifier (due to my mountainous surroundings which are NOT signal friendly!). The remote is simple but easy to use and understand. Setup was simple, just followed the directions in the guide and that was it, 14 clear channels! The price was $10 after the $40 government coupon which is a bargain! Just a hint as far as reception goes, I changed my cables running from my antenna to RG6 from RG59. The RG6 has better shielding and was a definite signal improvement since the cable was then no longer also acting as an antenna which messes up the digital signal due throwing the signal out of time/phase so you basically get two signals coming in at different times and that is not good! In summation this converter box (RCA DTA800B1) is a solid performer and is a good value at least it has been for me.

Summary: RCA vs Zenith
The RCA box had missed many channels that can be pickup easily by my other converter \Zenith\. I got this chip RCA converter in Walmart. At first, I thought the problem was the location or antenna; but, later when I placed an Zenith converter at same location and with the same antenna more channels shown up. What kind of design is it? Does anyone know if I get exchange or get money back? Does anyone know that the government had any set up program to remove junks? They started the HDTV and they should give us a good answer.
