Zenith DTT901 Review #1
Rating: 4 (good) Nickname: anonymous Date: 2008-10-07
Summary: An OK converter box.
Bought this at CC and again, these guys where clueless. I had a choice between the DTT900 & DTT 901, but the sales folks could not tell me the difference (they though it was just a printing mistake). Turns out the DTT901 added analog pass-thru but nobody at CC knows this! This converter does have a very sensetive tuner. Scanning at night picked up all the Chicago stations and many Milwaukee stations. Now I have to physically remove the Milwaukee stations from the channel list because most of the time these signals are not strong enough to receive picture. I would have been better off with a less sensetive tuner. Remote is really cheap. Aspect ratio options suck and have no intuitive meaning. Too many times I can't fill the screen of my CRT TV & I worry about burn-in. The default aspect ratio on this box should have been for the 4:3 standard aspect ratio of most CRT TVs so you don't have to keep changing the aspect option after changing channels.

Summary: Zenith DTT901 a winner
I have only had this unit for 3 weeks but so far it is a winner. I agree with most of the prior reviews about this unit other than the following.

I have no issues with the menu (apparently others are used to more menu info than I am).

I do not understand people talking about the signal coming in and out and not having such good picture quality. Did they buy an antenna or are they using their old rabbit ears? Your location is important in choosing an antenna. I live approximately half way between Providence, RI and Boston, MA, am at the bottom of a hill and I am surrounded. I purchased and like the Terk Technology HDTVi VHF/UHF HDTV Indoor Antenna. I also bought the Zenith box and the Terk antenna for my sister and a friend and they are also happy with them.

One final thing. There are numerous things that can effect reception, including things like the house/building having aluminum siding, wall insulation that has a foil backing, being close to an airport, etc.

Summary: Zenith/Insignia - wow!
I read several reviews on Amazon before deciding to try this box. I had gotten two discount "coupons" (a card, actually) from the Government and based on what I read here I decided to use one of them on this box. Amazon would not accept the coupon, so I drove down to Best Buy and bought the Insignia branded version.

I took the rabbit ear antenna off of my old portable TV and plugged it into the back of this box, attached the provided cable from the box to the TV, and plugged the power in. I turned the box on and the very intuitive on-screen menu walked me through a set up process that took less than two minutes. The box automatically scanned for channels. With the analog receiver in my TV I had 6-8 channels. With digital I have 22, although some are the analog duplicate of a digital channel. But with the PBS affiliate I now have three individual PBS channels, and I get Quubo for the kids.

I went out a few days later and bought a second one.

The only downside I have seen so far? In the initial set up there was an option to adjust the sleep time (default seems to be 4 hours). I figured I'd adjust it later if needed. I am unable to find that setting.

Would I recommend this converter box? Absolutely. It's been great, and I've had two of them for more then 2 weeks now.

Summary: Works great
Works well and is very intuitive. Installed easily and picked up a lot of channels, though this is the only converter box I have used.
